Stone Fence of the Church
The stone fence of Kuršėnai Church was built in the middle of the 19th century of rather heavy beautiful boulders and it was made higher in circa 1885. The wall was not destroyed during both world wars and was preserved to this day. Fences performed several important functions – not only did they mark territories and protect sacred sites from unwanted intruders, but they also symbolised spiritual and physical separation from the world. In churchyards and cemeteries, stone fences served as boundaries separating the sacred space from the everyday, giving these areas a special aura and sacredness. On 24 November 2017, on the church fence on Kapų Street, near the Deportees’ Cross, two commemorative plaques dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Lithuania’s statehood were unveiled. The Knights of the Cross of Vytis of Kuršėnai County who were struggling for independence are recorded on one commemorative plaque. And the other plaque contains the names of the volunteers of Kuršėnai County who were struggling for independence in the years 1919-1920.
