Old Kuršėnai Cemetery
The old Kuršėnai cemetery, established in 1810, was initially small, because only 390 people lived in Kuršėnai Town at that time. Over time, the population grew, and the area of the cemetery increased. Today, the cemetery is surrounded by a solid stone fence, symbolising eternity and solidity. The fence performs not only a practical function, but it is also an aesthetic structure: it was built of local stones, reflecting traditional Lithuanian construction skills. There are three entrances to the cemetery: two wider and one narrower. The wider entrance has a metal gate. This gate is identical in style to the gate of Kuršėnai Church, which indicates a similar time of construction and architectural consistency. The peace of the cemetery is protected by birch trees lane planted by Benediktas Gricius in 1949-1950. This lane not only completed the beauty of the cemetery, but also created a sacred atmosphere. In the middle of the cemetery, there is a stone altar, installed in 1966. This altar became an important symbol when civil commemorations of the dead were organised and the eternal light was lit. Stones used for the altar and fence not only add strength and durability to the structures, but also symbolize eternity and respect for the dead.
