Monument of Vytis
The Monument of Vytis (Independence) is made of concrete and stone. It was rebuilt in 1989 precisely the same as it was built on 16 February 1928 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Independence of Lithuania. At that time, the stone was the most frequently used material, and in order to make the symbol more elegant, it was plastered and painted. The photos of the past (1930) evidence that that only the surroundings of the monument, the appearance of the nearby buildings, and the decoration of the monument have changed. The monument was demolished on 8 July 1947 by Stalinists who did not love their nation, but it was restored by people of good will on 14 June 1989 in the years of National Revival. It is the place of national holiday rituals. Nowadays, the flag is raised here on public holidays and national festivals.
