Lourdes Grotto in the Churchyard
Lourdes Grotto is a sacred Catholic construction in honour to Our Lady Saint Mary. The stone Lourdes with three naves is located in the churchyard of Kuršėnai Church. Plaques built into the interior of Lourdes evidences that it was built in September-November of 1958 (to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady Saint Mary in Lourdes, France). An altar with the statue of Our Lady is located in the centre of the Lourdes Grotto, and below it, there is a figure of St Bernadette, representing her kneeling in prayer. These sculptures are one of the first works of the famous folk artist Rimantas Leparskas. The construction works were supervised by pastor Stanislovas Ilinčius – the dean of Kuršėnai of those times. The main builder of the Lourdes Grotto was Jonas Katauskas.
